Work on the first phase of Silverlink's Stevenson Quarter in Newcastle-upon-Tyne is expected to begin by September 2011. The scheme will include 3,716 sq m (40,000 sq ft) of offices and a 250- bedroom hotel. Miller has been appointed as the main contractor and the scheme has been designed by Space Architects (formerly Waring & Tate). The cost consultant is Faithful & Gould and the M&E contractor is Desco. Although Space has said that it expects work to begin in September of this year, Silverlink indicated that it expects to be on site possibly as early as late April.

Brookefield leaves Pilgrim Street

Last month Brookefield sold its share in its planned redevelopment of East Pilgrim Street to Aldergate and no longer has any involvement in the long- delayed project. A start date has not been determined.

EQ5 completed

EQ5, the joint venture development by Argon Properties and Whelan Construction, is now completed. The £13.8m re-development of the former Ballantyne Casino at 5 St Ann's Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, was designed by Ryder HKS, and is a five storey 3,194 sq m (34,380 sq ft) net office building. Atisreal and GVA Lamb & Edge are the letting agents.

Baltic Place nears completion

Southshore Developments, a joint venture between Robertson Property and City & Northern, is due to complete its £45m Baltic Place scheme in January 2009. The development on the site of the former Kelvin Works Foundry comprises two eleven-storey tower blocks with a 120 bed hotel and provides 12,232 sq m (131,665 sq ft) of office space between Baltic Place East and Baltic Place West. Baltic Place East will provide 6,783 sq m (73,009 sq ft) on eight floors, and Baltic Place West will provide 5,449 sq m (58,646 sq ft) on eight floors. DTZ is the letting agent.

Knowledge Central on site this year

The Knowledge Central building in the Baltic Business Quarter of Gateshead should start cconstruction later this year. The building will comprise meeting, lecture and conference space in addition to serviced office accommodation.

Late June finish for Trinity Gardens

Silverlink’s office development at One Trinity Gardens, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, will reach practical completion at the end of June 2005. The upper floors of the 11,148 sq m (120,000 sq ft) development have been pre-let by a law firm and the remaining 50% is being marketed by CBRE and Knight Frank. Taylor Woodrow is the main contractor and the architect is Waring & Netts.

Start date for Gallowgate

Terrace Hill’s speculative £12m office scheme at 30 Gallowgate, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, will get underway by the end of 2005. Last summer, the company received planning permission for the 7,657 sq m (82,420 sq ft) of offices and demolition of the existing building will commence during May with construction starting by Christmas. The main tender is currently out to contract. The letting agents are Knight Frank and the Leeds office of CBRE.

Ugly offices to be harmonious

The 1960's Westgate House and Norwich Union House in Newcastle-upon-Tyne are considered to be two of the ugliest buildings in the UK. However, a planning application has been made by developer Westgate Road Newcastle to demolish the eyesores and replace them with a "harmonious" mixed-use commercial and residential development.

West End quarter regeneration

Newcastle City Council is planning to regenerate the city's West End quarter over the next 15 years. The plans for the Discovery Quarter include major office sites, retail space, a site for knowledge economy industries, and housing. The plans also include a £20m learning centre.

New home for Gateshead College.

Gateshead College is planning to draw up a shortlist of eight contractors to build its new £20m accommodation on the Baltic Business Park. The project is part of Gateshead Colleges’ relocation and will comprise up to 19,300 sq m (207,745 sq ft) of space and is likely to contain a substantial office element. The scheme has just received planning permission and work will begin before the end of 2005.

Quorum offices ready next spring

Up to 13,935 sq m (150,000 sq ft) of office space at Quorum Business Park, near Newcastle-upon-Tyne, will be on the market from spring 2005. Buildings 5, 6 & 16 at the Quorum development will be completed in May 2005 and will provide 4,645 sq m (50,000 sq ft), 6,500 sq m (70,000 sq ft) and 2,780 sq m (30,000 sq ft) respectively. Another site, Quorum 3, can provide up to 2,780 sq m (30,000 sq ft) of offices but requires a pre-let. In addition, 8,918 sq m (96,000 sq ft) of offices was made available this May with the completion of Quorum 4. The offices were designed by Red Box and built by Grantside Developments. The letting agents are DTZ and Knight Frank.
